Deepening Thinking about Independent Reading Through Conferring, Craft Study and Writing (5th – 12th grades).

Supporting students’ growth as independent readers depends on conferring, record keeping, goal-setting, and regular writing. We want to deepen thinking through writing without killing a love of reading. This workshop will focus on 10 ways to encourage reflective, complex thinking about books students read independently. To assess means to ‘sit beside.’ When we sit beside readers and writers to confer, we have an opportunity to do some of our best teaching. Let’s unpack the subtleties that make a conference about independent reading work. We’ll look at short videos of conferences and the layers of teaching that result. We’ll consider our best note-taking tools and formative assessments of growth. Bring your conferring problems and let’s solve them. Create craft studies of voice, sensory details, and dialogue. Use passage studies from the books you’re already talking about in your classroom as models of sentence structure variety and rhythm. We will consider how to use independent reading to teach students to pay attention to a writer’s intention, the use of voice, and the organization of ideas and information.

Registration Fee (includes breakfast and lunch):  $15.00 per participant
Your district will be billed unless registration is cancelled one week prior to event.
