Workshop Description:  Increase student engagement with consistent and intentional practices that integrate literacy without sacrificing content.  During this professional gathering, we will explore the benefits and techniques for (a) reading a text closely;  (b) identifying and teaching academic and domain-specific words;  (c) generating authentic short research projects that require students to organize, paraphrase, summarize, and cite relevant information to support claims and enhance argumentative writing; and (d) developing (and encourage students to develop) open-ended and text-dependent questions to promote increased inquiry and spark rigorous thinking.
